Press release: Medsafe is investigating a potential risk of myocarditis following vaccination with Pfizer’s Comirnaty covid jab. It wants hear about any other reports to obtain more information on this “potential safety concern”.
Up to and including 19 June 2021, a total of 14 deaths were reported after the administration of the Pfizer Comirnaty vaccine. Following medical assessments by Medsafe it has been determined that:
- 10 of these deaths are unlikely related to the COVID-19 vaccine*
- 2 deaths could not be assessed due to insufficient information*
- 2 cases are still under investigation
Medsafe has received two reports of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and two reports of myo-pericarditis (inflammation of the bag-like membrane around the heart as well as the heart muscle) following vaccination with Pfizer Comirnaty.
A small number of myocarditis cases have also been reported in some other countries, such as Israel and the United States.
The myocarditis in these cases has generally been mild* and not required treatment. Medsafe says there is no suggestion that these cases are due to the vaccine but is collaborating with international medicine regulators on this issue.
*The Buzz says: Medsafe provides no evidence for its conclusions.
According to Medsafe, 14 Kiwis have died with the Pfizer vaccine, and 26 Kiwis died with covid-19 (not ‘of’ covid-19).
There is also no such thing as ‘mild’ heart inflammation. It is a very serious condition, and unlike the liver, the heart cannot repair itself. If it is damaged it is damaged for life, and could lead to additional health problems later in life, perhaps when playing football…
UPDATE: 14 July 2021: Medsafe now says 16 people have died following a Pfizer vaccination.
